This course is an introduction to 3D printing. The course will cover important settings for 3d printing such as infill, layer height, materials, speed, etc, as well as going over where to find those things in the slicing software and making adjustments. The 3D printing course is a two-part course that will take place on two evenings in the same week.

Price: $50 per session paid to teacher directly (cash, PayPal, or Venmo). Completion of Part I of the class is a prerequisite for attending Part II in person. Please note classes run different lengths of time (the Zoom is 3 hours long and the in-person is 2 hours long)

Requirements: 
You must purchase and bring a spool of 1.75mm pla flilament with you to the in person portion of the class. These run around $20 on Amazon and can last months. Instructor recommends the brand Hatchbox, which is the most popular and easy to use. Other recommended brands are: Overture, Proto-Pasta, ColorFabb, Ultimaker, and Makerbot. Please remember to bring a notepad or other way to take notes during class.

ATX Hackerspace has a CNC Router with a 5ft x 8ft bed that was custom made for the membership to use. The CNC Router course is a two-part course that will take place on two evenings in the same week.

ATX Hackerspace has a CNC Router with a 5ft x 8ft bed that was custom made for the membership to use.  The router is capable of handling a variety of materials from plywood, hardwood, and various plastics. It will do very clean vector cuts that will allow you fabricate incredible things like furniture, signage, custom parts, and artwork.  This course will teach you how to use this machine and others like it to fabricate items from line drawings.  The CNC Router course is a two-part course that will take place on two evenings in the same week.

 

Requirements:

You must wear eye protection while using the CNC router. Please remember to bring a notepad or another way that you can take notes during the class.  

 

Part 1 (Wed 6:30-9:00 PM on Zoom):

In Part 1 of the course, you will learn the theory and fundamentals of operating and programming CNC machines and using VcarvePro to create tool paths and G-code which a CNC machine can use to fulfill your instructions. You will get instructions and go through all the steps to create a G-code file which will be used in Part 2.

  • Basic theory of CNC and robotic manufacturing.
  • Wide range of cutting ops.
  • Materials, feedrates, bit selection for your job, shopping for carbide.
  • Which file formats you should use.
  • How to import CAD drawings and vectors into VcarvePro.
  • How to set-up your tool paths and cutting preferences in Vcarve.
  • How to export a G-code file that will give instructions to the CNC.

 

Part 2 (Thurs 6:30-9:00 PM in person at ATXHS):

In Part 2 of the course, you will receive hands-on training on setting up the CNC Router, and using your G-code from Part 1 on the machine.  You must take Part 1 - Designing for CNC and VcarvePro before you may take Part 2 - CNC Router Operation. The skills that you learn in Part 1 are essential and required for Part 2.

  • Using the CNC Router with LinuxCNC.
  • Set-up of the machine and tooling.
  • Safety procedures.
  • Setting up your work.
  • Setting up machine coordinates.
  • Operating the CNC Router.
