ATX Hackerspace has a CNC Router with a 5ft x 8ft bed that was custom made for the membership to use.  The router is capable of handling a variety of materials from plywood, hardwood, and various plastics. It will do very clean vector cuts that will allow you fabricate incredible things like furniture, signage, custom parts, and artwork.  This course will teach you how to use this machine and others like it to fabricate items from line drawings.  The CNC Router course is a two-part course that will take place on two evenings in the same week.

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

Requirements:

\r\n\r\n

You must wear eye protection while using the CNC router. Please remember to bring a notepad or another way that you can take notes during the class.

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

Part 1:

\r\n\r\n

In Part 1 of the course, you will learn the theory and fundamentals of operating and programming CNC machines and using VcarvePro to create tool paths and G-code which a CNC machine can use to fulfill your instructions. You will get instructions and go through all the steps to create a G-code file which will be used in Part 2.

\r\n\r\n
    \r\n\t
  • Basic theory of CNC and robotic manufacturing.
  • \r\n\t
  • Wide range of cutting ops.
  • \r\n\t
  • Materials, feedrates, bit selection for your job, shopping for carbide.
  • \r\n\t
  • Which file formats you should use.
  • \r\n\t
  • How to import CAD drawings and vectors into VcarvePro.
  • \r\n\t
  • How to set-up your tool paths and cutting preferences in Vcarve.
  • \r\n\t

  • \r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

Part 2:

\r\n\r\n

In Part 2 of the course, you will receive hands-on training on setting up the CNC Router, and using your G-code from Part 1 on the machine.  You must take Part 1 - Designing for CNC and VcarvePro before you may take Part 2 - CNC Router Operation. The skills that you learn in Part 1 are essential and required for Part 2.

\r\n\r\n
    \r\n\t
  • Using the CNC Router with LinuxCNC.
  • \r\n\t

\r\n\r\n

  • \r\n\t
  • How to export a G-code file that will give instructions to the CNC.
  • \r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

Part 2:

  • \r\n\t
  • Set-up of the machine and tooling.
  • \r\n\t
  • Safety procedures.
  • \r\n\t
  • Setting up your work.
  • \r\n\t
  • Setting up machine coordinates.
  • \r\n\t
  • Operating the CNC Router.
  • \r\n

The main point of the class is how to prepare rough lumber and get it ready for dimensioning. Typically you use a jointer, but if you only have a 6" jointer, how do you surface a 8, 10, or 12 inch board? I'll show you one method, and discuss another. Starting with a thick piece of pecan (probably), we'll discuss how to set up for surfacing the board and getting it prepared for dimensioning. You will have the option to re-saw your board, allowing you to make an even larger board with book matching and jointing. At the end, you can finish the board as a cutting board, or put it to use for another project. We will round over the edges on the router. This class compliments a glued up cutting board class that will also be offered. In that class, a glued up cutting board will be built from strips of different woods.

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

Prerequisites:  Intro to Woodshop

\r\n\r\n

Additional info:  Students should feel comfortable around planer, jointer, hot glue gun, table saw, and router. This class will not include finishing oils or products. You will be working in pairs. For the most part, you can still remain socially distanced, since close interaction is not required in the pairs.

Part 2 ($50 in-person at ATXHS):

\r\n\r\n

Part 2 of this course is in person at ATX Hackerspace using the tools in the woodshop as well as the red laser.  In this session, you will receive hands-on training on for the techniques discussed in Part 1 including glue up, surfacing/shaping (using tablesaw, jointer, planer, router, sander), adding embellishments, applying finish, and laser engraving.  You must take Part 1 - Technique Foundations before you may take Part 2 - Practical Application. The skills that you learn in Part 1 are essential and required for Part 2.

\r\n\r\n
    \r\n\t
  • Use supplied hardwood materials to arrange, glue up, and clamp cutting board blank
  • \r\n\t
  • Practice surface and shaping techniques on sample boards using tablesaw, jointer, planer, router, sander
  • \r\n\t
  • Add embellishments such as drip channels, handles, and feet
  • \r\n\t
  • Demonstrate use of jigs, stop blocks, clamping cauls
  • \r\n\t
  • Apply a food safe oil and wax finish
  • \r\n\t
  • Demonstrate laser engraving
  • \r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

Students who attend both sessions will leave with a glued up hardwood cutting board and the skills to finish the board at a later date once the glue is fully set.   Extra boards used for practicing skills will be available for purchase at the cost of the materials to anyone in Hackerspace (should be about $20).  These make great holiday gifts!

This class covers working safely and efficiently with the wood lathe. This includes how to secure pieces with a screw chuck, face plate and regular chuck; using a variety of different tools and ensuring that they stay sharp; and steps required to complete various projects, focusing especially on making bowls. This class may not be long enough for us to finish making a bowl from scratch, but you will leave with a piece of wood well on its way toward becoming a bowl - and the skills necessary to finish it.
